When I think of Vicky, I am reminded of one of the many sayings from John Wimber, one of the founding leaders of the Vineyard movement: “Never trust a leader without a limp.”
More than just a physical description, this statement underscores that all leaders who persevere have faced fiery trials and setbacks in their lives and ministry.
This sums up Vickie’s life and journey.
Her riveting story is a testimony of how to respond to adversity and setback. A testimony of how we respond when we don’t know or understand God’s will at times in His plan for our lives.
Yet, it is not just a story of surviving and overcoming a life-threatening disease. It also is a story of moving from an understanding of conditional love to unconditional love. Her given name – Victoria – beautifully describes her destiny and her walk with Jesus.
Facing initial diagnosis of amputation and possible death from this disease, Vicky outlines how many areas of her life were amputated, enabling her the opportunity to see what was really important in her life: her faith in an unfailing God, despite the circumstances, her family and her community.
This story is honest and unflinching; just like so many Biblical stories of people like us who had to wander through wilderness seasons only to come out on the other side stronger and wiser and having a deeper sense of God’s grace and steadfastness.
People like Jacob, who wrestled the angel, are never the same. He limps, yet is forever changed after his encounter with the living God.
I’m so grateful that Victoria chose to share her, Paul’s and her family’s story with us.
